So renters are always asking me, “Is the Canon 70-200mm 2.8 Mark II really better than the Mark I?” and the best way for me to answer that is… “Once you go Mark II, there is no turning back”. Better yet, think about this. Remember back in 1997… there was a thing called 56k and people were happy. A few years later, DSL shows up and complicates our life because we had to upgrade once again but it was so worth it. We all know that DSL > 56k all day, every day. The answer is clear. (if you are still on 56k, we need to have a talk). So yes, to simply put it, the upgrade is worth it!

Instead of telling you guys that the Mark II is better, we just put together 3 test shots for you to judge yourself. Both shot on the Canon 5d3 with identical settings. Remember that not only were the optics upgraded, but so was the AF speed and IS. No adjustments have been made. SOC (Straight out of Camera) and cropped. 100% crops shown below image.

Phone Test
Canon 5d3 | ISO400 | f/2.8 | 1/400th | AF-On | One shot | Center AF Point

Meter Test
Canon 5d3 | ISO200 | f/2.8 | 1/400th | AF-On | One shot | Center AF Point

Phone Test
Canon 5d3 | ISO800 | f/2.8 | 1/400th | AF-On | One shot | Center AF Point

Was it easy? Here are the answers:
1. Telephone: Mark I Left | Mark II Right
2. Meter: Mark I Left | Mark II Right
3. Bike: Mark II Left | mark I Right
