We all know the holy grail of Canon wide angle lenses and that’s the Canon 16-35L f/2.8 Mk II. Granted we all love this lens, it does come at a hefty price of $1699. Often, a lot of people forget that there are other ultra wide angles on the market. Although many of them are not as good as the Canon 16-35mm 2.8 Mark II, they do a decent job for their price point.

Below we used the Canon 16-35mm 2.8 Mark II as a base for corner performance.

The first would be Canon’s 17-40mm f/4 L lens coming in at $839. This lens is great because it has a great build quality, is light and silent and delivers consistent results. It is just as great as the Mark II of the 16-35 minus the fact that it is a stop slower. But the 17-40L got it’s reputation back in the day because it outperformed the 16-35mm Mark I in corner performance.

Second, Tokina’s 16-28mm f/2.8 FX ATX coming in at $650. Although this lens is probably the weakest of the group, it’s hard to knock it for it’s price point. However the bigger issue with this lens is that it is very heavy and due to it’s fisheye front element, you cannot use traditional filters with it.

Third would be the Canon 20-35mm f/2.8 L lens. This lens has very humble beginnings, being that it’s from 1989 and is Canon’s first professional wide-angle room lens. Coming in at $750, it is a pretty fair price, compared to it’s younger brothers. It is also made of alloy instead of the plastic that the 16-35L is made with. Although corner performance on this is not ideal for today’s robust full frame sensors, does a great job on crop sensors. One major drawback of this lens is that it does not have USM (ultrasonic motor).

Overall these lenses are great substitutes for the Canon 16-35 Mk II. Don’t let the price point get to you. There are great substitutes available that you can try out. What more could you ask for? Don’t take our word for it..check them out on our website by clicking here.
