Everyone knows this lens. It’s the perfect mid-range lens for just about anything. Basically every kind of photographer uses this lens or at least this range with the exception nature photographers. The Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 L Mk II lens is surely the first lens that comes to mind. It’s luxurious. It’s powerful. It’s coveted…at $2299. Yes, with the “L” label comes a steep price, but there are great alternatives.
Canon 24-70L MK I
The most obvious alternative would be its older sibling, the Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 Mk I lens at $1250. Introduced in 2002, this lens has been in every professional’s bag because it is optically, mechanically, and ergonomically great. The only setback would be how big and heavy it is. The AF is pretty quiet and quick. This lens focuses to within 8 inches or closer in front of the lens at all focal length settings, which means that you can get in close and not have to scoot back. Did we mention that it’s also extremely rugged. People have put it through hell and back and it still performs great!
Tamron 24-70mm F2.8
Next up is the new Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 lens. This lens is giving Canon a run for its money with the 24-70 range. It is the first (and still only) 24-70 f2.8 lens to feature image stabilization or Vibration Compensation (VC) as Tamron calls it and costs $1250. This lens out-performs the Mk I lens with sharpness and people even say that this lens is even sharper than the Mk II. It’s great for both photo and video, but with the VC, this helps with smoothness, especially when it’s being used handheld. It has a solid build quality and will take some getting use to for Canon shooters (the zoom ring is higher up and backwards).
Last, is Canon’s 24-105mm f/4 L lens. This is the lens that typically comes with the 5D series and the 6D. Granted it is a “kit lens”, it has it’s pros and cons. A lot of videographers swear by this lens due to it’s weight and image stabilization. Being that it is an F4, the lens is not that great in low light situations and the sharpness in the corners is not that great. This is a great lens for those that want to shoot video on-the-go without breaking the bank.
These are all great Canon 24-70 ii alternative Come give them a try by reserving them here.
